The Meaning of Human Existence(Edward O. Wilson)

 1. Aliens do not come.

The small blue dot that we call home is nothing more than a speck of dust at the edge of our Milky Way, one of the hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe.

There are countless galaxies and planets in the universe.

As mentioned in 'Cosmos', the probability of aliens existing is very low, and even if they do exist, we will not be invaded.

Invasion would be an act to colonize the planet Earth or to obtain resources, so I wonder if there is any reason to waste time and resources going back and forth.

Because if they had the science and technology to be able to jump across galaxies, they would not have to come looking for us, and they would have already found a way to satisfy certain resources with their technology.

They could get the resources they want even closer.

Thinking in another direction, even if we searched for the planet Earth out of simple curiosity, it would be too far to communicate, and I wonder what the point would be.

On the contrary, let's assume that we are looking for aliens on other planets.

Just like the above, if we have the resources we need, we can find them in nearby galaxies or planets, and if we have the technology to quickly travel across galaxies, we will be able to solve all the problems that have been on Earth so far.

If we look at the vast universe, human existence seems like nothing more than a microorganism parasitizing one of hundreds of billions of unlit dots.

2. Let's broaden our horizons.

If we include invertebrates, fungi, and microorganisms that have not yet been discovered, the estimated number increases significantly from 5 million to 100 million species. In short, Earth is a planet that is almost unknown.

I think that human science and technology are only at the first step.

We do not know much about Earth or humans, and we do not even know why we dream.

We still do not know anything, such as why certain diseases occur or why we sleep.

However, sometimes we think that we are conquerors of Earth and try to control everything that happens on Earth.

However, it is questionable whether we can control something if we do not know it. I think we can make more improvements and progress if we just learn more about fungi, microorganisms, etc.

We still have a lot to learn, and I think we have to learn a lot while living on the Earth with a humble attitude.

3. Paradox of environmental groups

How can we protect species when we don't know most of the species that make up the living environment of the Earth?

The problem we call global warming, the extinction of certain species and the resulting effects, and countless species are already being created and going extinct, so I started thinking about whether it is right for humans to protect certain species and make them extinct.

In fact, this problem called global warming is also caused by humans, or it could just be a cycle of the Earth, or it could be caused by causes we don't know.

Even in the structure of the food chain that we know, there could be other species, smaller bacteria or viruses, and chemical and hormonal influences.

Of course, there were issues like the sacrificial rites movement, DDT, etc. that directly caused problems by causing the extinction of certain species.

I really don't think we can know what is right from the Earth's perspective.
