Cosmos(Druyan, Ann)

 1. We live thanks to bacteria.

Male bacteria are alchemists. They can do things that humans cannot do even with their excellent scientific technology. They can make food by converting sunlight into sugar through photosynthesis.

The reason life on Earth can exist is because bacteria living on Earth in the past formed an atmosphere to prevent oxygen and water from escaping into space, and the protective shield formed allowed organisms to live.

Something that the planets around us could not do happened on Earth.

Bacteria evolved and became larger and more diverse, and more organisms were able to settle on Earth.

Mutations through viruses allowed them to adapt to changing environments, and in the process, more species emerged and their size grew.

It was only after all this time that the Earth we see today came into being.

As in 'Guns, Germs, and Steel,' bacteria are powerful organisms that can save us or kill us.

They can also help us a lot or have a bad influence on us. We are also a home for bacteria, and bacteria are responsible for our health.

They are simply faithfully fulfilling their roles in their own society that we cannot see.

2. The cause of illness depends on oneself.

What we do know is that the idea that illness and injury are caused by the wrath of the gods was first refuted in a text said to have been written by Hippocrates in 400 BC. Hippocrates wrote, "A doctor should examine everything about a patient, his diet and environment. The best doctor is the one who prevents illness.

...

All problems arise from natural causes."

In the past, most diseases were believed to be cured by offering sacrifices because the gods were angry, and if they did not get better, they offered even more sacrifices.

However, when we know the cause of most diseases, it is personal hygiene, bad eating habits, bad behavior, etc.

That is why I hope that science/medicine will develop further. There are still many diseases whose causes are unknown or cannot be cured.

I think that if we look back on our eating habits and behaviors and make changes to live healthily, we will see good results.

3. Humans were just lucky.

Darwin's research showed that humans were not the kings of the living world who were created differently from other creatures and chosen as their managers. Humans were just descendants who appeared late in the long-standing family of life and happened to do well.

It has only been a few thousand years since humans have had a major impact on the planet Earth, which has lived for billions of years and still exists today.

Starting from the sea and moving to land/sky, plants and animals settled on the planet Earth, and now humans are living on the Earth and having a great impact.

We are just mammals that live on the Earth and have a purpose to live with the Earth.

Without the Earth, there would be no us, and without the plants and animals that live on the Earth, there would be no us.

In the distant future, another life form, not humans, may succeed us.

I think we shouldn't look at the Earth from a human perspective alone, because humans live for a very short time compared to the Earth.

4. We can solve the problems we face.

Even when we seem to be cornered, life somehow finds a way to the future.

As mentioned in the book, we were almost in a situation where we could have been destroyed due to the destruction of the ozone layer caused by the use of freon gas in the past.

However, with the advancement of science and technology, we are using hydrogen fluorocarbon or fluorocarbon to replace freon gas.

Although we have solved the problem of freon gas, we are currently experiencing problems such as increased water temperature and increased atmospheric temperature due to global warming.

As there is a substitute for freon gas, I think we can overcome global warming someday.

We are moving forward for the future somehow, and we can find better solutions.
